CPSM Fire Study Causes City of Grand Blanc To Be Two Years Ahead of Projections

Thomas Wieczorek, Director of the Center for Public Safety Management (CPSM), presented a fire study about the Grand Blanc Fire Department operations on September 11. Wieczorek was certain it would take at least one year to get the necessary equipment – but to his surprise, it was done in a matter of weeks. Wieczorek said the new department’s response time is averaging 5.16 minutes. The standard response time is seven minutes.

“We’re trying to stay ahead of you, we send recommendations and its done before we get back into a report,” he said. “You are a year to a year-and-a half ahead of where we thought you’d be.”

Wieczorek gave his presentation, Sept. 11, on the city’s fire study which was commissioned to review the operations of the Grand Blanc Fire Department, particularly those aspects that had an impact on the City of Grand Blanc.

Wieczorek said the new department’s response time is averaging 5.16 minutes. The standard response time is seven minutes.

“You are under the national standard by two minutes,” said Wieczorek. “That’s outstanding.”

Wieczorek said the challenges going forward are to finish the strategic plan including standards of response coverage, allowing the city to earn additional points toward increasing its Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating.

“By in large, you are on your way to having a very good department,” said Wieczorek. “We’re happy to have been working with you all this time, and we’re pleasantly surprised how far and how fast you’ve come.”
